The Introduction to the FL NGSSS Civics Standards course has two objectives:
- To provide an overview of Civics education in terms of its importance, its current state, and the state and national standards that guide its curricula.
- To increase awareness of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) in Civics while providing you with some ideas and resources for implementing them in your instruction.
Course Information
There are two modules to be completed in the course.
Module One: The Importance of Civics Education: Quality and Standards
The first module is the same across all grade levels. It is designed to provide an opportunity to:
- understand the importance of Civics within the Social Studies curriculum;
- explore national Civics standards such as those provided through the Center for Civic Education and the National Council of the Social Studies ; and
- explore how the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Civics relate to each other across grade levels.
Module Two: Pedagogical Content and Skills for Civics Education
The second module offers different tracks for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. At each grade level, users are encouraged to connect the NGSSS to particular content and pedagogical tools that are grade-appropriate. The module also provides a foundation of Civics-related content and an understanding of primary sources that is necessary for quality Civics education.
Registration for the course is available on a monthly basis. Contact Valerie McVey with questions or to register.
